My Safe Florida Home Grant: How It Works for Your Roof (2026)
Short answer: My Safe Florida Home is a state program that starts with a free wind mitigation inspection, then offers matching grants of up to $10,000 for upgrades that make your home stronger against hurricanes. Several of those upgrades are part of a re-roof. For most homeowners, the state pays $2 for every $1 you spend. To qualify, your home must be your homesteaded primary residence, insured for $700,000 or less, and have had its original building permit applied for before January 1, 2008.
Here’s how it works for your roof, step by step.
Who qualifies for My Safe Florida Home?
Under Florida Statute 215.5586, your home must:
- Be your homesteaded primary residence. Rentals and second homes don’t qualify.
- Have an insured value of $700,000 or less.
- Have had its building permit for original construction applied for before January 1, 2008.
- Have a hurricane mitigation inspection through the program within the previous 24 months.
Many homes in The Villages, Ocala, Orlando and Tampa Bay were built before 2008, so a lot of our customers are eligible.
How much does the grant pay?
- Most homeowners: The state matches $2 for every $1 you contribute, up to $10,000 from the state.
- Low-income homeowners (as defined by the program): Grants of up to $10,000 with no match required.
For example, if eligible mitigation work costs $15,000, you’d pay $5,000 and the state would cover $10,000.
What roof work does it cover?
The grant pays for hurricane mitigation, meaning the parts of a roof that keep it attached and dry in a storm:
- Roof-deck attachment: re-nailing the plywood decking with stronger fasteners.
- Secondary water resistance: a sealed underlayment that keeps water out if shingles or tiles blow off.
- Roof-to-wall connections: hurricane clips or straps tying the roof structure to the walls.
The grant also covers impact windows, impact doors and garage door reinforcement. Keep in mind it’s a mitigation grant, not a general roof-replacement grant. A re-roof is often the most practical time to do deck attachment and secondary water resistance, so the two go hand in hand. Your inspection report and grant paperwork will spell out exactly which items qualify.
How do I apply?
- Create an account at mysafeflhome.com and request your free wind mitigation inspection.
- Get your inspection report. It shows which upgrades your home qualifies for.
- Get quotes from contractors registered with the program.
- Apply for the grant and wait for approval before any work starts. Work done before approval generally isn’t reimbursed.
- Complete the work, pass a final inspection and submit your paperwork.
Funding comes from the Legislature in rounds. When a round runs out, new applications can pause until the next one. Check mysafeflhome.com for the current status before you plan around a grant.
Is it worth it even if I’m not replacing my roof yet?
Yes. The free inspection alone is worth getting. A wind mitigation report can lower your insurance premium right away, because Florida insurers are required to offer discounts for documented mitigation features. It also tells you exactly what to ask for when you do re-roof.

Frequently asked questions
Does My Safe Florida Home pay for a whole new roof?
It pays for hurricane mitigation improvements such as roof-deck attachment, secondary water resistance and roof-to-wall connections, up to $10,000 from the state. Those are often done during a re-roof, but it isn’t a general roof-replacement grant.
Is the My Safe Florida Home inspection really free?
Yes. The program provides a free hurricane mitigation inspection to eligible homeowners, and the report can also help you get insurance discounts.
Can I start work before my grant is approved?
Generally no. Wait for grant approval before signing for or starting the work, or you risk not being reimbursed.
My home was built after 2008. Do I qualify?
No. The original building permit must have been applied for before January 1, 2008. Newer homes were built to stronger wind codes.
